Phishing Tactics and Counter Strategies

How to avoid getting hooked

It is very easy to get caught by a “phisher”. There you are, sorting through 100 or 200 e-mails with your morning cup of coffee. Deleting. Opening. Responding. Flagging. You’re almost on auto-pilot. Then, BAM. You click a link. The page looks familiar. It wants to know your password.

By this point your senses usually kick in and you run away from the site. Ahh, but it was very close.

Luckily, my senses have always kicked in in time when I have inadvertently gone to a phishing site.

But I’m not perfect and there is always the possibility that I will be hooked. So, I have a plan.

A simple plan, really. I’m of the opinion that if I do get hooked I will realize it immediately. It will be one of those “Uh, Oh” moments. So, I maintain a list of the 24-hour contact numbers for the credit card companies, banks, and other entities I work with - all within easy reach in my Outlook Contacts file.

Wham, bam. The accounts are canceled or at the very least a hold is put on them before my information can circle the globe a second time. A hassle, yes, but considering the alternative…

Of course, the best strategy is to not get hooked in the first place, but no one is perfect. Social Networking and Security

From PC World: Using Social Networking Safely

Here is a good article if you are already on or considering joining one of the social or professional networking sites.

For new and existing clients, PW2 Web can advise you on which networking sites will be most effective for your business and help to get you started. It may not be necessary or even desirable to be on all the networking sites.

Remember, networking on the Internet and everywhere else is an ongoing process. It takes time.

My profiles:

Linked.com
Namyz
ClaimID

PW2 Web is also on:
Facebook
MySpace
YouTube

I’ve recently begun exploring the uses of Twitter.

I’ve found Facebook to be useful in finding what is happening locally.

MySpace is useful, although clients have reported some bad experiences with the site. From a Web designer’s point of view, it’s a mess!

If you’re interested in learning more about the social and professional networking sites and how PW2 Web can assist you, please contact me at rick@pw2web.com or by phone at (440) 942-3943.

News: Windows Vista last service pack

From The Christian Science Monitor: Windows Vista: The ‘New Coke’ of the PC age

Many of you know that my experience with Windows Vista has been less than stellar. In fact, after not being able to get the upgrade to work correctly I created a brand new installation. Needless to say, this took A LOT of time and several sleepless nights.

Even though Vista has been working fine for several months, I know that my next upgrade in about 12-18 months will most probably be to Macs. Windows has become too “high maintenance”.

So, I’m in the market for Macs - at least one desktop and one laptop. I will appreciate any comments and suggestions from Mac users.

From the NYTimes.com: It Takes a Cyber Village to Catch an Auto Thief

Another great use of the Internet. There are a few community groups out there that are doing things similar to this, such as e-mailing members on lost dogs, house break-ins, etc. Let’s hope it catches on.

Internet Safety

Here’s an informative post at Google blog:

A common sense approach to Internet safety

Over the years, I’ve found it is easy to become lax about Internet safety. Especially when you think it’s almost second nature. Like putting on a seat belt, though, it’s good to be reminded every so often and it’s good to teach the young people about it.

Shrink-wrapped no more?

Time: Is Shrink-Wrapped Software Dead?

Good article on the current wave of free webware and software. Be sure to check the “To pay or not to pay” comparison.

As a word of warning: do not download or install any software that is not from a reputable source. Freeware programs can often be loaded with spyware and viruses. If you are not sure, don’t do it.

You can also go to Download.com for all types of freeware, shareware, and payware. All programs at this site are spyware-free.
